I live out in the boonies and have cable internet, which generally works fine, but occasionally we lose connectivity. Thought it would be easy to find a widget that would display connection status, but I did not have any luck with that. Maybe there is an existing indicator that I am not aware of?
Problem I am trying to overcome is that when I don't have an internet connection, mail keeps trying to pull new mail, but doesn't seem to know there is no internet connection. Same with web browser, although web browser (Firefox) does eventually pop up a message that ' You might not be connected to the internet.' TIA for any ideas / suggestions.
Hi Burnt, First download and install the free and helpfull menu utility, 'MenuMeters', from www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10451/menumeters After installation, open it from System Preferences and in 'Network' Tab, tick the 'Display Network Menu Meter' box. On the 'Update interval (seconds): ' choose the first line (0,5 seconds). Choose 'Display orientation:' Transmit/Receive and 'Display prefers interface:' Primary (automatic). I also have all the other boxes unchecked. Now you have an internet indicator on your Menu Bar, that is grey color when your network is down. (with command-click your can transform it next to the WiFi indicator). If your internet connection is down, you can drug n drop the application 'Network Diagnostics.app' on your Dock (/System/Library/CoreServices/Network Diagnostics.app), and force the system with this app to search for new connection.
